Cascading Bend

Set in and against the Cascades, mountain biking trails abound in this natural playground. An hour’s drive out of town is the volcano Mount Bachelor from which Deschutes’ refreshing ESB takes its name. The Sparks Lake to Lava Lake Trail is heavenly singletrack sp? covering lava rocks and crossing alpine streams amidst lush forest. The Ale Apothecary’s Arney loves Skyliner Sno-Park as a starting point for some of the best trails, suitable for all skill levels. Take your bike even further west to Oakridge where you can pedal into Brewers Union Local 180 (www.BrewersUnion.com, 48329 E. 1st St., Oakridge) for some pints of traditional ale, such as Union Dew IPA, the pub favorite. Or stay close to town and explore Shevlin Park, 600 acres of mountain biking and hiking paradise.

Brian Yaeger recently moved to Portland, OR, where he homebrews and is exploring the beers of the Pacific Northwest.
