This beer is a time machine. From the stately label fitting of America’s oldest brewery to the twist-off cap, this “dark brewed” porter is an enduring reminder of the country’s beer history. Dark brown, with a thin tan head, it has a nose that is slightly metallic, tinny at first before a faint candy root beer aroma emerges. It has a thin body, not much offered in the hops department, but there is some anise and caramel in the overall flavor. This was an early benchmark and works just fine in a pinch.

In the first edition of The Pocket Beer Guide, I described this beer as “thinnish but dependable,” and I see no reason to alter that opinion here. Deep brown in color, it has a simple, slightly sweet and slightly roasty, licorice-accented aroma, and, yes, a thinnish body with a moderate astringency and notes of over-roasted coffee and burnt grain. An American porter in the same sense that Shiner Bock is an American bock: simpler and more restrained than classics of the style, and well-suited to being gulped from iced pint glasses.

Hey, I live in San Francisco and lad forgotten your line of beer until someone mentioned Porters they love. All of a sudden I remembered your Porter and set out to buy some. To my surprise I could not find a single bottle of it out here. Looking at your list on this site it seems you do not sell in California and wonder why. tim
