This canned beer is Westbrook Brewing’s interpretation of Gose (pronounced Goes-uh), a traditional German-style sour wheat beer brewed with coriander and salt.

The pucker after my first sip was involuntary. The description written by the brewery’s marketing folks on the can says it’s sour, salty and delicious. Well, there’s your truth in advertising. There is something lemonade-ish about this. Not the powerded stuff in a can, but the real thing, with salt rather than sugar. There are floral notes and this wonderfully dry finish that begs to be followed with another sip. I tend to drink gose in the summer, and now having one in the can means some more variety while enjoying the great outdoors.

I quite like this style for its stellar ability to refresh, so I suppose canning it makes complete sense, even if it does at first seem a little odd. Light sandy-gold and quite hazy, the Westbrook version boasts a dry, forcefully coriander-accented aroma with a slight citrusy tang, and a lemony, moderately salty and tart body that finishes bone dry and a bit evocative of hand-squeezed lemonade. A lovely warm-weather refresher that hits all the right notes.
