Every brewer knows that you drink with your eyes as well as your nose, mouth and Fred Eckhardt’s ears. This beer is very pleasing to contemplate. It has a dense, rocky head, well retained, and outstanding lacework. The beer has a fine, dark amber color and no haze, wintry or not. On the nose: orange flower water, Turkish delight. In the palate: pineapple sprayed with sugar, liqueur chocolates, sesame toasts. Finish: dusty, spicy, cinnamon.

In these days of Imperial This and Imperial That, calling a beer “Doubly Common” might leave a drinker expecting a beer that pays tribute to Anchor Steam, the prototype California common, with an excess of ingredients. The sorry alternative would be one totally pedestrian (“doubly common”). This is neither, but instead a festive offering, if laid-back in a SoCal sort of way. Bright and orange in the glass, it offers citric and minty aromas before smooth caramel/toffee flavors. Pleasantly bitter hops linger through a dry finish.
