Nut Brown Ale

January 1, 2013
Reviewers: Charles Finkel

Blackstone Restaurant & Brewery

Nashville, TN

This beer was designed by Blackstone brewmaster and homebrew author Dave Miller. It is light on the palate, caramel brown in color with medium body and a nutty, smooth toasty finish. It follows the style of the brown ales in the northern part of England.

ABV: 5.6

ABW: 4.5

COLOR: 22

BITTERNESS: 23

ORIGINAL GRAVITY: 1052

AVAILABLE: TN

Nashville, best known for music, can now boast of another art—brewing. Intensely dark brown robe is highlighted with a contrasting ecru head. Nose is biscuity, earthy and appealing. On the palate, a good balance between malt and hops produces a beer of substance, pairing well with almost any meal. We found it out of this world with deep-fried zucchini flowers, brook trout meunière, new potatoes and strawberry shortcake, and I’m not whistling Dixie!
- Charles Finkel
Like a brilliant shiny copper penny, this brew invites, capped off with a frothy fine head.  Cocoa-chocolate biscuit aromas grace this nut brown like no other I’ve ever had from England. Simply smooth with a sweet overall balance. Perfection in a brown nutshell. Wow. I’m into this beer. Hop bitterness is smooth and emerges  just enough to refresh and entice. Absolutely delicious. Speaking of cheese, this one might go great with a blue.
