Moaten

November 1, 2009 Warrenville ,IL
Reviewers: Charles Finkel

Two Brothers Brewing Co.
Warrenville ,IL

Available: IL, WI, IN, OH, NY, MA, PA, MN

Moaten (“Flanders meets Chicago”) is a collaboration between Two Brothers Brewing Co. and Urthel brewery in Belgium. Half the beer was aged with Lactobacillus for souring, and the unsoured half was aged in oak barrels. After six months aging, the beers were blended.

ABV: 6.5
ABW: 5.17
Color: 15.9
Bitterness: 21.6
Original gravity: 1069

Fantastic package, including a cork finish with wire closure, reeks of authenticity. Beautiful, bright, deep reddish brown is topped with a sponge-like head of long lasting, tiny bubbles forming handsome lace as the glass is emptied. Sparse nose unfortunately does not meet expectations. Flavor is delicate, with the finesse of a cru Beaujolais—not at all overwhelming as some sour oak aged beers can be. Very little oak is detectable. Clean aftertaste with subtle lemon finish. Great choice for crispy Long Island duckling, served with a cherry sauce, fingerling potatoes and cooked organic carrots, finished with a mixed fruit tart.

A redness that reflects the unhinged conspiracy which it promises. Bold toasted malt and caramel aroma gives way to an equilibrating well-balanced sourness. Unmercifully refreshing. Well brewed. Not extreme, but with immense mystery. A collaborative brew whose flavor is accessible to all beer drinkers. This is a winner of the sixth dimension. I’ll open my wallet for this beer anytime.
