Heineken had global ambitions long before other large breweries. It expanded by acquiring breweries all over the world, including family-owned Moretti in Udine. Now brewed near Bergamo, the beer pours bright amber with a reddish tinge, appropriate to its name La Rossa. The nose is faint, with a hint of sweet maltiness; the mouthfeel is round and pleasant with little hop balance. We sampled it with caponata, linguini with meatballs and wood-fired margherita pizza, but prefer a drier beer to accompany spices like garlic, oregano and basil, and tomato sauce.

La Rossa has always been one of my favorite brews. Rich tawny color, the foam is compact and persistent. Pleasant malty aroma, light molasses in the backdrop and a hint of vanilla. Robust and complex taste, with some sweetness up front, then flavors of pure malt, followed by raisin, milk chocolate and some hops. The finish is soothing, pierced a little by some warmth and hop bitterness. This is a sturdy and thoroughly enjoyable beer with plenty of depth. Strong work.
