Atlanta Brewing Co. was founded in 1933 by Greg Kelly (a former Senior Manager with Guinness) when homebrewing was legalized in Georgia. The recipe for Red BrickAle was originally developed by Bavarian-born brew master Karl Strauss and Irish brewer Brendan Dobbin.

Solid, well made beer. Luxurious. Deep copper color, like a shiny brew kettle. Huge head of the most amazing ecru color, holds and holds. The nose is clean and lightly malt-like. It is on the palate that the delicious, smoky, malty flavor bursts forth. Well hopped, the two flavors merge producing a beer of real character. Serve with baba ghanoush, smoked baby back ribs, and heirloom tomatoes with fresh mozzarella.

Warm amber color with a big, sweet, toasted malt aroma. Mild hop flavor balances nicely with malt character. Medium body with potential good drinkability. But, unfortunately, this beer did not survive the transportation to my end of the world. The aftertaste is a bit acidic and out of character. If I could, I’d ask for a fresher sample.

A red-brown beer with a heavy barley-white head. It has a tempting and rich aroma of chocolate and cocoa backed by floral hops. Hops come bursting through on the tongue but they are balanced by dark malts that add an almost astringent note. The finish is dominated by roasty malt, chocolate, hedgerow fruits and bitter hops. It may be inspired by English mild, but has far greater hop character. Great companion for pizza.
