The promise of 100-plus IBUs was daunting, but this beer turns out to be remarkably well-balanced. It has a big grapefruit aroma that leads into a bittersweet palate with citrus fruit, spicy hops and lightly toasted malt. The finish is intensely bitter and spicy and is finally dry with honeyed malt balancing rich fruit and tangy hop resins.

Honey-colored and hazy as weissbier, the beer forms a thick head the color of vanilla ice cream. The aroma is pleasantly orangey but almost subdued, with malt playing through and alcohol notes showing up late. For all the bluster about IBUs, the bitterness is broad and prominent, but still balanced against the malt, which shows through sweetly. The beer dries out in the finish, leaving behind a nice stone-fruit aftertaste. Triple IPA? Okay, if you say so. To me it’s simply a good young barley wine, very drinkable now with pork in a green pumpkinseed sauce.
