Brewed with roasted malts and Northern Brewer and Cascade hops, it has a glowing amber/russet color with a big toasted-malt aroma underscored by roast chestnuts, burnt fruit and peppery hops. Bitter hops build in the mouth, but they are balanced by freshly shelled walnuts, dark fruits and chewy, nutty malt. The finish is bittersweet, ending dry and bitter but with compensating notes of dark fruit and roasted grain.

Pours tawny garnet with a creamy beige head. Nose is biscuity, sweet with cereal grains, earthy, leafy hops. Super smooth mouthfeel, sweet upfront, malty, roasty and toasty, dark chocolate, black treacle and ripe dark grapes. Sweetness isn’t cloying, but carries through. Raw, leafy, citric, soft biting hops. Earthy, dry, biscuity finish. Brown ales are often overlooked by beer geeks in their search for greatness. Santa Ynez would be proud. This is a damn good beer.
