Off Grid Pale Ale is a wonderful interpretation of the classic pale ale style. It has a distinctly deep amber color and great character and body. The three varieties of hops provide a wonderful aroma and a citrus and spicy hop flavor. Made from sorghum and brown rice extract, tapioca maltodextrin, caramel color, molasses, hops and yeast, Off Grid is proud to be the hoppiest gluten-free beer on the market!

It’s a fruity nose on this gluten-free beer: apple, orange, some melon. But the beer itself is flatly, stingingly bitter, without the body to support it. The initial rush is more flavorful, but then a harshly mineral bitterness kicks in and grips the back of the palate. Too much bitterness for the frame here.

I’m old enough to remember when gluten-free beers were dreadful, truly awful things. This is not! Copper-amber in color, it answers the question of why certain other gluten-free beers don’t use hops to cover up the deficiencies of their grains with a wallop of toasty, nutty hop aroma and a whack of steadily growing bitterness in the body. It would be nice if the sorghum and brown rice extract delivered more body to support all that hoppiness, but given its restrictions, I’d say this is a most impressive pale ale.
