A glowing amber beer greets the eyes with a big, frothy off-white head that caps this beer nicely. Grassy aromas thump you right in the nose before being joined by a parade of fruit—lemon, grapefruit and even a bit of mango—and, finally, a hint of pine. Expect similar flavors at first sip, with a sweet malt backbone that sturdily supports all the rest of the typical DIPA shenanigans that this beer has to offer. Many DIPAs can borderline on being thick and sticky-sweet, which can make drinking one a real commitment. But Boy King is a lot more nimble and leaves you thirsty for more.

If you ever need a lesson in producing a double IPA, take one from Coast. They’ve really hit the target with this amber beauty. The key is harmony. It’s no good having booming hop flavors if they’re out there on their own. The malt base has to be substantial enough to keep them in line. Here, Coast has nailed it. Hops dominate, of course, loading the tongue with burning, tangy, sappy resins and juicy orange notes, but the malt foundation does its job brilliantly, allowing the hops to sing but never shout. An impressive beer that cleverly understates its strength.
