This is labelled a Double India Pale Ale and weighs in at 9.3%. This really is a pale ale, the gold color that inspired the lager brewers of Central Europe when they toured England in the 19th century to see how IPA was made with the first mass-produced pale malts. If you remember that old candy called sherbet lemons, it’s there on the nose of the beer, backed by sappy malt and piny hops. The palate is a superb balance of rich fruit and malt with earthy hop resins while the finish becomes dry but along the way offers a journey that encompasses sweet fruit, bitter hops and a malt note that reminds me of Polish rye bread. It’s amazing what you pick up on a voyage to India!

Hazy deep gold in color, this beer raises a white head that soon drops back to a cap. The hop aroma is a slightly funky tropical citrus blend – tangerine, orange, lemon and mango. The bitterness is relatively mild and the beer sports a dry but pleasantly juicy center. The malt rides out with the hops to a fruity finish. Characterful and pleasantly balanced, this is a beer for people who like hops, not just IBUs. It will make a fine pairing with a curried crab cake.
