(Kailua-Kona, HI) – Kona Brewing Company has signed on as one of the presenting sponsors of the Doheny Surf Festival coming to Dana Point, CA, August 11-12, 2012. The event will help raise funds for legendary surf spots at Doheny State Beach, San Onofre, Trestles and San Clemente State beach. At the festival’s beer garden, Kona will unveil a distinctive new brew that was previously only available in Kona’s home market of Hawaii.Proceeds from beer and festival ticket sales will go to help support the treasured San Onofre, Doheny and San Clemente State Beaches in light of the recent announcement to close 70 California state parks.

Doheny State Beach, established in the 1930′s as California’s first state beach, and San Onofre, Trestles and San Clemente State beach are the heart of Southern Californian surfing and see more than 2.4 million visitors a year, but because of the State Park’s slashed budgets, needs assistance for operational expenses. The two-day festival will showcase art, surf demonstrations and memorabilia, live music, environmental and ocean education, surf apparel, surf pro autograph signings along with tandem surfing, Outrigger Canoe and SUP exhibitions and of course, plenty of Liquid Aloha. Only 3,500 tickets can be sold each day, so attendees are guaranteed plenty of elbow room to see bands including Eddie Money, Fishbone, Paula Fuga, Common Sense, Honk, The Originalites, ALO, The Eliminators, Everlast and more.

“When we heard the park closure announcements, we knew supporting Doheny and the San Onofre Foundation was absolutely the right to do,” said Kona Brewing president Mattson Davis. “I’m all for a big party, but when we can help a great cause and uphold our sustainability values with very little waste and footprint, it’s a homerun. Looking forward to being a part of this year’s festival!”

Like the Kona Brewer’s Festival, hosted annually in the company’s birthplace Kailua-Kona, the Doheny Surf Festival will minimize its footprint with numerous recycling and composting stations. Jim Kempton, festival director and CEO of the San Onofre Foundation said, “The Surf Festival’s vision is to present the surf culture as a leading edge movement in the world today. This will be a celebration of the surf culture and an example of an environmentally sound event that is endeavoring to be 100 percent carbon neutral.”

As well as Kona Brewing, other event sponsors are Subaru, California State Parks, San Onofre, and Doheny Beach Interpretative association. More info here: http://www.dohenysurffest.com/
