The first thing any body mentions with this beer from Dogfish Head is that it pours, against all odds, a clear golden (because logic would dictate a darker ale due to the cocoa nibs used in the making of this brew). It also has little, if any, head retention and the carbonation fades quickly. The notes one expects of the cocoa nibs and ancho chiles are muted but come through strong in the mouthfeel. The 9 percent ABV is unassuming but will deliver. I sampled this at room temperature and paired it with Thai food. Definitely a beer I’d return to again. And its got a good story behind it.
A bit more context, that I am aware of. Ron Browning (whom is ehteir head, assistant or consulting brewer for North Sound, last we talked in June that was still up in the air) used to be head brewer for Skagit River Brewing Co, also in Mt. Vernon. After a somewhat bitter personnel change, Ron hopped on board with North Sound Brewing. It seems that Skagit River has suffered a bit since they lost Ron and it seems VERY good news that he’s working with North Sound Brewing. I’m looking forward to giving them a try!
