Like a genie in the bottle, the wondrous hop aroma escapes before the seal is completely uncapped. Close your eyes and thoughts of European pils appear. Alas, the genie’s pale pallet possesses only a touch of barley color and a head that disappears before you can count to three. Mouthfeel, however, is sprightly and the flavors are clean and balanced with the lovely hop character promised by the nose. My wishes were granted with tuna tartar, boiled new potatoes, and a freshly baked focaccia.
- Charles Finkel
An exquisite and authentic-tasting German pils brewed in Berkeley and Austria—this one in Berkeley. Crystal clear, pale and golden with a crisp, refreshing taste and aroma. Sounds like a commercial, but this is for real. Hop aroma and flavor is floral, honey-ish; American hop character and very pleasing. This is a beer that would go well with many types of food. Few other American craft brewers are making a beer like this. It differentiates itself.
- Charlie Papazian
A sensational pils from a 400 year-old Salzburg, Austria, brewery: the beer is also brewed in Berkeley, CA. Pale gold in color, it has a traditional cornflour and “noble hop” aroma. Tart hops, juicy malt and a hint of lemon fruit dominate the palate while the finish is dry and bitter with lightly toasted malt and fruit, and a late hint of hop resins. Clean and quenching, it reminds me of the superb pils brewed by Weihenstephan in Munich, the world’s oldest brewery.
