Hopalicious

May 1, 2008 Madison, WI
Reviewers:Roger Protz - Garrett Oliver

Ale Asylum
Madison, WI

Available: WI

Brewed with eleven separate additions of Cascade hops.

Alcohol (vol): 5.5
Alcohol (wt): 4.38
Color: 9
Bitterness: n/a
Original gravity: n/a

An unfiltered pale bronze beer. The aroma bursts and booms with grapefruit and other citrus fruits, along with spicy hop resins and sappy malt. The palate is rich, full, deliciously and tartly fruity with juicy malt and a gentle hop bitterness. The finish is finely balanced between tangy fruit, biscuity malt and peppery hops. Cleverly made: the great hop character is firm but not overpowering and allows malt to make an equally important statement. An ideal companion for blue cheese or roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.
- Roger Protz
A hazy honey color and a small but sustained head. The aroma is brightly hoppy without being outrageous and shows some nice resiny notes. On the palate, the beer is relatively light, crisp and clean, very dry in the center with nice malt flavors and crackling minerality. This is classic, tasty, straight-up American pale ale, with no steroids needed. If only everyone did it with such restraint and flair. It’s nice to see such great beers coming out of Wisconsin these days. Some Maryland crab cakes with just a little kick of spice, and I’m home free.
