Stacked Milk Stout
September 1, 2012Horny Goat Brewing Co.

A true to form Milk Stout that is sweet and light. Roasted coffee and chocolate notes give way to a sweet finish of the milk sugar added during the boil.

Silly label which fails to list the ABV. Deep bright brown ale with ruby highlights features a dense head that hangs on and on. The nose is subtle, but fresh. On the palate, it is clean and refreshing with a pleasant vanilla-like sweetness, but without any coffee or chocolate nuance. To call this beer a stout is a bit of a stretch but we did enjoy drinking it with a variety of foods including vegetable tempura, miso soup and sashimi.

What’s in a name? I’m clueless, but this deep deep reddish-chestnut brown brew promises uniqueness… and delivers the unexpected. Pours like a milky stout, but the palate is dry, yet full of roast malt and toasted flavors. The lighter color is a “zig.” So close your eyes and you get the “zag.” Great flavor, but don’t expect the classic “milk stout” character. This is an American “lite” version, but nicely done as a stand-alone clone. Seems sessionable and designed for drinkability, which it has. Worth a try to see if it tickles your fancy.
