Alaskan IPA

May 1, 2007
Reviewers:Roger Protz - Fred Eckhardt - John Hansell

Available: AK, ID, MT, OR, WA, WY

This is a true India pale ale — pale bronze color and with a potable strength of 6.2% by volume. It has a spicy and peppery hop aroma with tangy citrus fruit and a rich hint of malt loaf. Juicy malt, spicy hops and grapefruit/lemon flavors vie for attention on the tongue while the finish has some toffee sweetness from the malt, but is balanced by hop bitterness and tart fruit. The beer salutes 21 years of brewing in Juneau and is a fitting brew to mark the notable occasion.
- Roger Protz
For starters, listen to the gently expressive head and sniff the wonderful hop aromatics. Now look at the glass: perfect color to complete the picture. But wait — we need to taste this beer. Such an experience comes our way only occasionally. These hops are beautifully matched to their wonderful malty background. Definitely not a beer for children, but quite pleasing to the adults.
- Fred Eckhardt
I eagerly await any new beer from this brewery. It’s nice to see them venturing into the hoppy side of the beer spectrum. Hazy gold color with a fluffy head and very aromatic. Plenty of citrus notes along with a hint of pine, honey, and caramel throughout. Surprisingly light-bodied — but that hoppy, citrus rind finish is as invigorating as surfing in Alaska in wintertime.
- John Hansell
