Some American beer fans are surprised to visit the Munich Oktoberfest and find that the beer is no longer dark, but golden. This is modern “festbier,” with a bright antique gold color and pillowy head. The aroma is full of nice malts and the palate shows a fine-tuned balance — just enough bitterness to offset the malt sweetness. Flavors are linear and reach a bready conclusion. I miss the old style and its darker malts, but this will be tasty with a spit-roasted pig.

A hint of red is true to style: a Märzen or March beer matured over the summer for drinking at the great autumn festival and brewed with a touch of darker malt for color and mouthfeel. The aroma is big on malt, with powerful hints of spicy hops and an old-fashioned confectionery known as barley twist. The palate is finely balanced between rich, biscuity malt and hop resins, followed by a finish that becomes dry with good hop resins developing to match the malt and candy notes. I can hear the oompah band and smell the roasting food...
