Logsdon Straffe Drieling

October 26, 2016

Logsdon Farmhouse Ales

Straffe Drieling
Hood River, Oregon
Style: Belgian-Style Tripel w/ Spice ABV: 8.8%

Logsdon’s tripel includes “a touch of oats” and whole-cone Hallertau hops.

Melon rind. Some cross of mint with a faint hint of clove. Some would say peppery. Tropical fruit: mango, papaya. Faint note of cooked egg yolk. Bright hint of blueberry as it warms. On the palate it is dry and sweet with hints of peach syrup. Some heat. Carbonation, spice and attenuation give a very clean finish without significant perceived bitterness. Soft-cooked peach and lingering spice in aftertaste. Overall: fantastic fermentation/spice notes, fruity base and a very clean, dry finish. Went well with an avocado, roasted red pepper and Parmesan chicken wrap.

An aroma that mashes up the best parts of Juicy Fruit and Big Red chewing gum. It’s floral with spice, the kind that pricks at your nose. Tart lemon, white pepper, ripe pear and assertive clove come through on the palate. This is a deep thinker of an ale and fun to look at, too. Bottle conditioning gives this a thick white head atop a burnt-orange liquid. The foam leaves a hard lacing on the glass as it empties. The adage, “If it grows together it goes together,” applies to food pairings here: this beer with roasted assertive green veggies like Brussels sprouts makes a winning combo.
