Farmhouse’s Saison 7
July 1, 2006Available: CA
This bottle-conditioned saison is golden in color, with a slight haze and a peachy, faintly bubblegummy and spicy aroma. The body shows its strength in a moderately rich and coating mouthfeel, and carries a round fruitiness that speaks again to peaches, but gives way to an assertive, faintly citrusy hoppiness, ending in a more sharply bitter and slightly warming finish. A little more finesse would make me appreciate this more, but in the meantime, I’ll enjoy it with a croque monsieur.

Big, bold freshly mown hay. Grassy with fresh-yeast character. Complex phenolics and a touch of acidic fruitiness. Low thresholds of hop character. Tingle of alcohol, yet not overwhelming. A real mouthful of liquid food with agricultural and biological complexity. Perhaps for some a love affair, but different enough that it may not be kind to everyone’s sense of beer balance. Approach with caution and if fortunate, celebrate with delight.

A pale hazy gold color with fairly low carbonation, the beer barely raises a head. The nose is interesting—orangey, floral, gamy, and peppery all at once. The palate seems sweet at first, with a burst of malt and citrus in the center, finally balanced by restrained hops. The finish is slightly sweet. An enjoyable beer, but I have to wonder if the bottle re-fermentation fully finished; saisons are usually bone-dry and highly carbonated. Still, it would be nice with spicy shrimp pad Thai.
