Known in the United States for its Oktoberfest, Hacker-Pschorr is reaching across the pond with this first of four beers earmarked for the American market. Think of this golden-hued initial offering as a “kissing cousin” to the Maibock, with a clean malt aroma, a medium effervescence that carries the underlying sweetness and just enough earthy, grassy hop aromas and flavors to keep that sweetness in check. Rich and relatively robust, but still ending crisp and clean, this version is perhaps a bit more assertively hopped, which should make American beer fans happy.

It’s Starkbierzeit in Munich, the time of year when Bavarians savor some of their strongest beers, so it was good to join the party by sampling this limited-edition bock. Once the swing stopper was flipped back, the beer poured rich and golden, lemon and lime joining aromatic herbs in the slightly bready nose. The taste was suitably full, smooth and creamy, with a little more citrus and a dry, herbal hop bitterness. Sweetness lingered a while in the otherwise bitter, herbal finish, which was also thick and grainy. A big, chewy beer to see off the last chills of winter.
