It’s not just New Belgium’s Fat Tire. There’s Ska’s Wheel Sucker, Hopwork’s Bike IPA, Chama River’s Broken Spoke, and, of course, Boulder’s Singletrack. People passionate about biking and those who are fanatical about craft beer share a huge overlap. Naturally, the mountainous areas of this country that have become renowned for their biking are breeding grounds for beer cultures to support the riders and the brewers who, not surprisingly, are often included in that first group. But once it spread from ancient Sumer (present-day Iraq) to the lands of Bavaria and Bohemia, it didn’t take long for the know-how to leap across watery barriers to the United Kingdom and, obviously, the United States. Do a search on Youtube for “Schlitz Rafting Beer Commercial with Dick and Joe” and you’ll be treated to one of the most ridiculous beer-lifestyle spots outside of the Saturday Night Live spoof for Schmitt’s Gay Beer. The copy that the voiceover guy reads is piece of work: “The river’s running high and wild…carving a path out of the earth…. Whitewater. Alive. Free.
