It’s hard not to ignore a beer raising money for the shores of Louisiana. However, that’s the premise behind David Blossman‘s new Abita beer and we’re all about it. A dry-hopped weizen pils, this sounds like a perfect summer beer from the bastion of summer beer drinking. SOS – A Charitable Pilsner pours with a wheat beer haze and a delightful tight head. I should confess, I served it at room temperature, which was a great move. The body was medium-to-full with a very soft mouthfeel. The texture was just very silky and full. The flavor lacked the full-on citrus of wheat beer, which may explain the roll of pils, keeping the wheat at abeyance but bringing out the dryness. A very clever combination especially when tied to the soft mouthfeel. Of course, the desert of this beer come from the dry-hopping that mediates any sort of harsh hop bitterness with a subtle, herbal finish. Not a loud French Quarter sort of beer, but a soft, rounded, pleasant beer that reminds one of the bayous, the sunsets and sunrises of a quiet Louisiana re-finding its shores.
Sounds great. Going to the Abita Beer Dinner at the Brickwall Tavern in Asbury Park tonight. Hope they have some there to try.
