There’s a big clue about what to expect from this beer right on the label: English-style. But because this is Great Divide, they of course put their own spin on it. But in a good way. Pouring slightly hazy like a July sunbeam, aromas of tropical fruit and sweet malt start things off. The first sip delivers sweet hints of nuts and toffee before a juicy wallop of citrusy hops take over. As the sweetness begins to fade, giving way to the growing hops finale, the dulcet tones once again reappear ever-so briefly before bitter-sweet citrus notes take a final bow.
(K. Klemp) Light amber and slightly hazy on the pour, it gives up a rocky and persisent head with lacy trails. The nutty caramel malt in the nose overwhelms some of the earthy hops and hints of ripe pear. A slick mouthfeel and silky body gives way to grainy biscuit malt flavor and some sweetness, and finally a burst of orange, woodsy hops. The hop and malt balance, sweet and nutty aroma and flavor, and rich malty finish nudge this pale ale towards amber ale to my palate. Some proper fish and chips splashed with malt vinegar would go swimmingly with DPA.
