This style was first brewed to take the chill out of snowy winters so it is a natural to be brewed in Norway. Dark chocolate robe with a delightful reddish, cocoa colored head that hangs on and on, leaving a delicate lace on the glass. Highly hopped (75 IBU), the nose is a bitter and beautiful, treacle, coffee, and herbs. The palate is cognac like, alcoholic but rich, smooth, and satisfying. I like the slight medicinal character and can imagine it as a antidote to a cold or sore throat. Finish lingers, clean and fresh. Great with a starter of herring in cream sauce, a main course of grass fed tenderloin steak with a side of crispy fried cipollini onion rings, followed by salted chocolate truffles.

Unique roasted barley character compels this deeply dark demonic stout. Complexity of flavors creates a bombshell. This ain’t no yard sale beer. It’s like listening to poetry in the dark. Like its namesake “O” flavors, aromas, textures, balance, aftertastes surround you with robust intrigue. If beer drinkers are born to weep, they can do so with tearful happiness. Clean drinkability.
