Time was when drinking a San Diego brew was as exciting as a trip to the Navy recruiter. Things have changed in what has been called “America’s Finest City,” to which could now be added “for hop lovers!” Karl Strauss Brewery became one of the big reasons for the change when it opened 20 years ago, inspiring others to follow. Tower 10 IPA has a distinctive, deep amber color capped with a rich and creamy off-white head that lasts and lasts, finally yielding to fine lace attaching itself to the glass like barnacles on a big boat. Beautiful floral nose explores various aromas of hops: herbs, tree fruit, citrus, conifer, molasses and pineapple. Though hop forward, the malt component is powerful and satisfying, with a firm, round mouthfeel; perfect for a seaside picnic of ceviche, and local Dungeness crab cakes with spicy garlic aioli sauce, finished with Rainier cherry pie.

Crystal clear copper finish. Head sits there and asks, “Well, what are you waiting for?” Explosive, endearing hop aromas shout “Wow!” A beer I want to try. Smooooth hop flavor, bitterness and aroma wrapped into a quintessential American IPA experience. Complex hop character works, reflecting skill of the brewmaster. Definitely a go-to beer among the best.
