The Abyss – a barrel-aged imperial stout from Deschutes Brewery – pours black with a thick tan head. Boozy bourbon, roasted malt and bitter espresso notes. A crème brûlée mouthfeel. Baker’s chocolate covered coffee bean-accentuated with an dry, ash-like finish. The molasses shows up strong as the stout warms in the glass. A delicious and stellar beer. Wish I had another bottle as I’m curious to see how this one ages. If only they had East Coast distribution…

Deschutes Brewery The Abyss 2011 Reserve

The Abyss is my #1 favorite beer of all time! It is so deliciously complex, yet ever so easy-drinking. Its a must try! If you ever get the chance… Don’t pass it up!
Best beer in the world ! Too bad they don’t make it available year round.
How does it compare to Brooklyn Black Chocolate, my favorite? Nothing mentioned about ABV- haven’t seen it in the east- so many new brews coming on line.
