Smuttynose Brewing Company Really Old Brown Dog Ale

If you haven’t been to Portsmouth, NH, you have missed a special micro beer culture. Not a culture of microbeers, but a small corner of good beer. Peter Egelston has led a quite revolution there for a few decades and one of his companions during that time was his dog who is on the label of this truly extraordinary double brown ale from Smuttynose Brewing Company. Like a double wit, double brown strikes me as oxymoronic. Still, this is a beautiful beer with three dominant elements that blend together like a great metaphor. fr course, the appearance is a delight, with various shades of brown depending on your point of view. The nose is all toast and nuts. However, the flavor was a ragout of three treats. The brown sugar of the malt laid out a sweet foundation, balanced by the sharp dryness of the hops. The heat of the alcohol ties them together perfectly. Fortunately, this comes in a 22 oz bottle so there is enough to savor.
