I have a special place in my heart for Newcastle Brown Ale as it was the beer that introduced me to the world of English Brown Ales in my early twenties. The beer now can be purchased in mini DraughtKegs. Once tapped this beer can be enjoyed fresh for up to 30 days. It pours brown with a nice thick head. Roasted nut notes greet the nose while the backbone of this brew is all malty sweetness. There’s also some caramel lurking in there as well. It holds about ten pints and has an ABV of 4.7 percent making this an appealing session beer for a small group of people. And it’s portable, so you can bring it to the picnic or to the holiday party.
The mini-keg costs $22 and its 5 liter size is equivalent to 14 12oz bottles. I can buy a 12 pack of Newcastle for $11.99 making the keg almost twice as expensive as buying the beer in bottles.
Definitely not worth it. The beer coming out of the keg is tastes no different from the bottled version.
Now if the keg used nitrogen instead of C02 we’d have something. But unfortunately, the C02 makes it just as over-carbonated as any beer sold in the US.
