Full disclosure: Our Samoyed is named Yeti, and it’s not just because she’s a white, Yeti-like fur ball. I also named her in tribute to this, one of my favorite beers. So, conjuring up my most objective journalistic skills, I offer this review. The pour is black as night with a cappuccino-froth head; body is as rich and smooth as George Clooney; dark-roasted coffee aromas bring in an assertive bitterness. But Yeti deliciously toes the line between rich, chocolaty, dessert characters and bracing, top-of-the-morning coffee notes.

Heavy hopping has always been intrinsic to the style, and Great Divide’s blockbuster doesn’t disappoint. From the near-black pour, you anticipate deep, dark grain aromas and flavors, but then the hops hit you, ripping through the lush, toasty chocolate notes and pounding the nose and taste buds with grapefruit, orange and fragrant flowers. The hops also wrap themselves around the finish, competing with alcohol to provide a tangy burn on the palate, but the malt doesn’t give way easily, laying down more bitter chocolate. An intense but impressive beer.
