I’m tired of the rush of witbiers. Everyone wants the Blue Moon market, and they’re all over the place. Still, the can’s a nice touch, as is the busy old-timey label proudly proclaiming use of locally-grown wheat. This is a sweeter interpretation, fruity and not overly spiced, but the spice and citrus zest hang nicely in the mouth. I like my whites drier, but this would be an excellent morning beer with a plate of pears and crisp apples.
- Lew Bryson
This canned, highly effervescent take on the Belgian-style wheat beer has a boldly perfumey, fruity nose, even served cold, that might put off some as too aromatic, but appeals to me greatly. There is an orangy presence, no doubt, but also a fragrant, vaguely peppery spiciness that grown in prominence as the beer warms. Not that warming will be too much of an issue with this quaffable beer, which manages to be sweet without being cloying, fruity without density and dryly spicy in the finish. If this isn’t served at the Durham ballyard, it should be!
- Stephen Beaumont
