Rogue Ales re-opened the brewery where the Eugene Brewery, originally built in 1866, stood. Henry Weinhart purchased it in 1890. The building was torn down in 1914 and rebuilt across the street , where it is sited today.

I can’t get to grips with a beer dubbed “India Style Red Ale,” as the stewed malts such as English crystal that give beer an amber or red color weren’t developed until the early 20th century, long after the hey-day of India pale ale. But, historical analogies aside, this is an impressive amber-red beer with a nutty, spicy hop and sultana fruit aroma. Bitter and peppery hops burst on the tongue, balancing dried fruit and biscuity malt. Creamy malt, cobnuts, spicy hops and tart fruit dominate the long and complex finish. A good companion for tangy English Cheddar or Stilton cheese.

India-style Red Ale? Don’t get me started… okay, just the facts. The beer has a hazy, deep russet color and raises a thin tan head. The nose is pleasantly hoppy, full of citrus fruits and pine needles, with a backdrop of candyish malt. The bitterness is robust but well focused and the palate is dry and flinty. The hoppy minerality plays out into a long dry finish. A nicely balanced beer that will work very well with spicy dishes: I’m thinking Chicken Pad Thai.
