Shipyard’s Export Ale

Pouring a rich copper color, Shipyard’s flagship ale offers a full, apricot- and citrus-accented aroma with underlying notes of caramelly malt. For an ale intended as a session beer (as they style begets), we’re off to a good start. The body begins with a gentle fruitiness before the hops emerge to add a drying and mildly tannic bitterness, creating a full mouthfeel that’s in wonderful balance. A final session ale, indeed, but also a beer I’d enjoy with some old cheddar and crusty bread.

A big, fruity ale aroma with little hop character. This golden-hued ale has lots of drinkability, with balanced and wonderful hop flavors that are somewhat earthy and British in character. Lively and vibrant, yet not assertive in the least. Would pair well with delicate occasions of the heart while willingly robust enough to stand up with pairings of the soul. Best served not excessively chilled.

The beer pours deep gold with a slight haze and a firm off-white head. The spicy-fruity nose (with its whiff of garden mint) is instantly recognizable as the famous Ringwood yeast. Broad, crisp hopping up front leads to a dry, toasty palate and an austere, bone-dry finish. Some earthy hops linger. A sturdy and reliable beer that shows its British roots clearly, this would make a particularly nice cask-conditioned pint. Slice up some rare roast beef and don’t spare the horseradish sauce.
