Central Waters Brewpub is housed in Parkin Place, a converted dairy processing plant in Amherst, WI, which operated from 1941 to 1966. Parkin Dairy was noted for the elegant molded ice cream desserts, and the molds are on display at the modern brewpub.

Not quite black but nearly so, this beer stands up a thick beige head. The aroma is full of caramel, dusty cocoa and American coffee with “creamer.” On the palate, the beer is soft and smooth, with sweetness showing first before bitterness moves in to balance it. Roast flavors play through the center into a dry finish. A nice beer that sits on the fence between the main course and dessert, between chicken molé and vanilla ice cream. You might just have to have both.

A mouthful of a name and a mouthful of a beer. Deep ruby-red with a cappuccino head and a superb aroma of roast coffee, dark chocolate and burnt fruit. Creamy malt, bitter hops, chocolate and coffee coat the mouth while the finish is bittersweet with a fine balance of roasted grain, dark fruit, bitter hops and coffee. A fine companion for either shellfish or chocolate dessert.
