The good news is the handsome package showcases the lovely reddish brown color of the beer. The bad news is that the bottle is clear. Nose is sweet malted barley, fresh and inviting. Handsome eggshell head is of tiny bubbles. The rum character marries beautifully with the more traditional beery flavors, like an old friend you didn’t know you had. We served this big, 7.5 percent beer with raw milk cheddar and fresh persimmon.
- Charles Finkel
Presented in a clear bottle, it is bright and chestnut-colored. Forcing a half inch head to stimulate the aromatics, I pick up some smoky malt, mineral, and woodsy hops in the nose. The mouthfeel is medium and creamy. Up front, mellow bitterness is a combination of hops and smoky phenol, the flavor pleasantly peaty and round, with oak, vanilla, malt, candied fruit, and buttered rum. This is a friendly, complex wee heavy, begging for a plate of rustic bread and assertive artisanal cheeses.
