In 1874, George & Suzanne Bateman sold their farm and purchased a small brewery in Wainfleet in Lincolnshire. For more than 100 years and four generations, the Bateman’s continue to brew a range of beers, including this winter warmer, available for the first time in the United States.

Full amber color, exactly what I’d expect for a winter warmer. Candied fruit and caramel grace the aroma, with some raisin and the slightest hint of molasses. Heavy on the crystal malt on the palate, as both body and lingering sweetness are in full force. Some cherry, toasted grain and malted milk in the flavor, and just enough hop bitterness to take the sweet edge off. This is certainly a sipper in spite of its modest strength, perhaps a beer to enjoy throughout the day during the holidays. I see it at ease with either a hearty meal or succulent dessert.

Gorgeous holiday amber glow, though head dissipates rapidly. Heritage English ale fruitiness in aroma precedes beautifully balanced and festive ale flavors. Rich English caramel malt, yet well attenuated; moderately dry. Earthy English hop flavor and gentle bitterness will be a celebrated accompaniment with holiday food. Warming and comforting, yet without over-the-top alcohol content. A good choice for the winter holidays, especially when you’re having more than one. One hundred percent English.
