Baltimore is closer to Bruges than you may think. Big bottle with artistic cork and cage closure says “Drink me, I’m Belgian (style).” Gorgeous golden color is slightly turbid, tinged with green. Bright white, rocky head deposits a lovely lace on the glass as it dissipates. Nose of sugarplums and spice. Round flavors and yummy yeast play on the palate like characters in Bruegel’s Garden of Earthly Delights. Fruity, not sweet, it is excellent with holiday ham, pork roast with apples and blue cheese.
- Charles Finkel
Mysterious ale for mysterious people. No indication what’s in the bottle except that it proposes to be an erudite brew, cork finished in a tall bottle. Fruity Belgian-like ale aroma and flavors immediately get undone. Sweet malt begins with a cloud of joy. Hop character seems one-dimensional, bitter but balanced; yet overwhelmed with fruity, alcohol and sweet baby malt. A brew you’d only find in specialty Belgium a decade ago. Now available and made in the U.S.A.
