When I first spotted this label, I was skeptical. I am usually not a fan of the cutesy “kiddy drawing” look, even if it does feature a guy drinking beer with hops and barley growing around him. But one sip changed my mind. This is a very drinkable ale with a surprising hop presence. Despite the relatively abundant hop dosage, which lingers quite a while on the palate, there is still a grainy malt backbone, a bit of fruit and a big, frothy effervescence that sticks around as well. It’s a refreshing quaff that would taste great with a meal, after a long day of yard work—or even while coloring with the kids.

Laverstoke Park is an organic farm in southern England, owned by former Formula 1 driver Jody Scheckter. The two beers (there’s also an Organic Lager) are not brewed there, but at Hepworth & Co., although the malts and hops are grown on site. This is a bright golden, bottle-conditioned ale with a full, sweet, pale malt character overlaid with sappy, perfumed hops that also add a dash of citrus. The hops in the finish are reminiscent of a green-hop beer and rather intense, helping to dry the palate. Quite unusual flavors overall, but ones that grow on you.
