O’Fallon Wheat

September 1, 2007 O?Fallon, MO
Reviewers: Stephen Beaumont

O’Fallon Brewery
O’Fallon, MO

Available: MO, IL

O’Fallon Wheat won the bronze medal in the American Hefeweizen category in the 2005 Great American Beer Festival.

ABV: 5.1
ABW: 4
Color: 3.6
Bitterness: 10
Gravity: 1048

The American wheat ale style is not one of my favorites, but at least the O’Fallon’s doesn’t muddy the stylistic waters by claiming to be a hefeweizen. Described as an unfiltered wheat, it lives up to billing with a very hazy, rich gold color and fresh, malty-grainy aroma accented by citrus notes. The taste is pretty straightforward as well, with dry, lemony malt and faint bitterness plus some spicy notes revealing themselves in the second half and finish. Chill well and serve with the devilled eggs at your next picnic.
- Stephen Beaumont
Truly unfiltered with plenty of yeast to gaze at. More yellow than golden, with minimal head retention. Yeasty/bready aroma indicative of its pedigree. Refreshingly light taste, but with substantial yeasty flavors that wheat beer enthusiasts can appreciate. Mild and inconsequential aftertaste expresses this essay on American wheat beer as a style. Successfully done. Lahmejun and thin slices of basturma would offer a splendid culinary contrast

Stephen Beaumont boarded his first plane at the age of 15 and hasn’t looked back since, obsessing about travel to the point that he gets nervous if he doesn’t have a ticket or two stacked on the corner of his desk. When he’s not running around in search of new taste experiences, he makes his home in Toronto, where a new cultural experience is only as far away as the next neighborhood.
