Newport Storm Derek Extreme Stout

Derek, a stout, is the fourth in the “Cyclone” series of beers, following past limited releases that included a brown ale, a bock and an IPA. These “extreme” beers are given human names, like the Atlantic storms they commemorate.

Color: 117
Bitterness: 61
Original Gravity: 1079
Malts used: pale, Munich, chocolate, roasted, flaked barley
Hops used: Magnum, East Kent Goldings, Mt. Hood

A London Cockney would reduce Derek to “Del Boy” and this becomes for me Del Boy Stout—jet black with a cappuccino head, followed by a complex aroma of burnt toffee, roasted grain, licorice and hop resins. Bitter roasted grain, dark fruit, espresso coffee and bitter hops fill the mouth. There is a sudden burst of sweetness in the finish, but it is quickly challenged by bitter and burnt notes. Wonderfully refreshing.

This beer calls itself an “extreme” stout. That would be difficult to refute, with a thick blonde, quiet, soft spoken, enthusiastic head leading to a dense black, almost opaque, beer. This is surely a stout to remember, and don’t let the beer’s unexpected 61 IBUs scare you. The huge gravity of 19% protects this beer from itself, and the 8.7% alcohol satisfies the gods. Go for it!

If this swirling swath of darkness finds you, brace yourself for waves of espresso, 70% cocoa chocolate, roasted malt, smoked licorice, dark pit fruit, and lingering bands of bitterness. Happily, I’m a survivor. (Or should I say, I’m a happy survivor?)
