Magnumus ete Tomahawkus ESB3

January 1, 2007 Morrisville, VT
Reviewers: Roger Protz

Rock Art Brewery
Morrisville, VT

Available: VT, MA,CT,NYC,PA,NJ

Magnumus and Tomahawkus refer to the hops: “ete” in Latin means ” YOU GO!” according to the brewery. Despite the fact that the brewery is located in Vermont, founder Matt Nadeau chose the name “Rock Art” for his beer to honor the image of Kokopelli he had encountered in petroglyphs in Desolation Canyon on the Green River near Moab, UT.

Alcohol (vol.): 8.0
Bitterness: 80
Malts used: Pale, and crystal malts
Hops used: Magnum and Tomahawk

This packs a punch, an 8% bitter with a massive fruity nose of marmalade and raisins. Ripe fruit dominates the palate, but massive hop bitterness starts to build, allied to peppery notes. The finish is long, dry and bitter with juicy malt and more tart, tangy, and rich fruit. A sipping beer or great with roasted vegetables or pizza.
- Roger Protz
A secretive, but not quite silent, head introduces this richly colored brew, but the nose DEMANDS one to partake. Eloquent to say the least, and we can't wait to partake: Eight and 80! Alcohol and IBUs—how can we resist? But the 22-ounce bottle does demand respect—maybe I should have invited a friend. On the other hand I WANT IT ALL! This beer is not to be ignored by the likes of me AND is well worth a trip to Vermont, especially in the winter!
- Fred Eckhardt
ESB cubed? I guess that makes this beer an extra special, extra special, extra special bitter. (You can say that again. And again.) Bottom line here: this beer has the balance of an English ESB—with the citrus fruit, caramel sweetness and hop bitterness you would expect in an ESB—but on steroids! Like the beer’s label says, “This ain’t for no mama’s boy or daddy’s girl!” Sold in an unforgiving 22 oz. ESB (extra-sized bottle).
