IPA 395

March 27, 2014
Reviewers:Charles Finkel - Charlie Papazian

ipa395_22_2014-04Mammoth Brewing Co.

Mammoth Lakes, CA

IPA 395 is Mammoth Brewing Co.’s ode to the Owens Valley and the Highway 395 corridor. This double IPA is bolder than the brewery’s Epic IPA and is brewed with locally grown hand-picked sage, juniper berries and wild hops, when available.

ABV: 8

ABW: 6.4

COLOR: 32

BITTERNESS: 60

ORIGINAL GRAVITY: 1076

AVAILABLE: CA, NV

Mammoth head of moonscapelike tan bubbles slowly disappears, leaving a beautiful lace on the glass contrasting with a bright copper color. Spicy floral aroma is in your face (nose), unique and creative from hops combined with juniper berries and sage, a lovely, distinct combination that carries through in the flavor. Round and robust, 395 wraps the palate with a delicious balance of malt and spice, making it an exceptional beer for food. Recommended with homemade sage and butter linguine, topped with grated Parmigiano-Reggiano.
- Charles Finkel
A desert brew beckoning an arid thirst. Deep amber crystal clear with a predominant malty nose. Slight desert aromas of spicy sage and berrylike fruitiness. Strangely, the anticipated hop aroma is nearly absent. Rich caramel malty flavors round out significant hop bitterness. Sage and juniper berries are subtle. I suspect when fresher (not as aged), juniper and sage emerge brilliantly. Complex and interesting beer worthy of exploring.
