Deep, dark cocoa color contrasts with a tan foam, like white caps in a stormy sea. Bold nose of treacle and espresso is oh, so satisfying, a perfume to entice the drinker to a shipboard romance. Fruity burnt caramel; bitter coffee; rich, dry, dark chocolate, all mitigated with grassy hops play on one another, like a properly harnessed wind, propelling this porter to perfection with rich, flavorful food. We relished it with a rare grass-fed hamburger, though a great steak (porterhouse?) would be even better. A little too flavorful for oysters on the half shell, it was ship shape with Oysters Rockefeller.
- Charles Finkel
Pitch black, opaque, with a creamy, coffee-colored head. Faint licorice root, dried plum, dark chocolate and some buttery notes in the aroma. Lighter in body than expected. Nice roasted layer on the top. More dark chocolate, powdery malts and a touch of ripe, dark fruits. Mildly buttery beneath. Hops are modest, but present with a splash of citric, salt and leaf. Breath of alcohol. Malty dry finish with a hint of apple. A most enjoyable robust porter.
