Hoppy Man Double IPA

July 1, 2010 Boulder, CO
Reviewers:John Hansell - Stephen Beaumont

Twisted Pine Brewing Co.
Boulder, CO

Available: CO, LA, TX

Hoppy Man double IPA is the “father” of Twisted Pine’s flagship brew, Hoppy Boy IPA. The father is much stronger and more bitter than the son. Also in the works are Grandpa Hoppy, a barrel-aged IPA, and Ghost Face Killah, a beer brewed with ghost chilies (the hottest pepper in the world).

ABV: 10.5
ABW: 8.4
Color: 59
Bitterness: 107
Original gravity: 1002

Hoppy indeed, but what I like about this beer most is its balance and drinkability for its 10.5% ABV. Thick, richly textured, with gobs of fruit (pink grapefruit, peach, golden raisin), layered sweetness (honey, caramel, toffee), and a firm, balancing hop bitterness. Perhaps it should be better named “Well-rounded, very strong man with an easy-going disposition?” Yes, that’s a mouth-full. But a delicious one!
- John Hansell
Amber-hued and hazy, as if they stuffed it so full of hops they simply couldn’t filter them all out. And judging from the nose, that may well be the case—spicy hop and citrus hop and herbal hop notes all layered over rich toffee malt. The body starts with some of that toffee, but then turns potently bitter, with a robust mix of nutty, citrusy hoppiness, alcohol and a fruit cocktail kind of fruitiness all leading to a long, lingering bitter finish. An intense barnburner of a beer best left to the very end of the day.
