Hoppenberg Uncertainty Principle

March 27, 2014
Reviewers:Charles Finkel - Charlie Papazian

Hoppenberg Uncertainty PrincipleRiver North Brewery

Denver

A Belgian spin on an American hop bomb, Hoppenberg Uncertainty Principle is hopped with Cascade and CTZ hops, fermented with a house Belgian yeast strain and dry-hopped with Cascade.

ABV: 9.0

ABW: 7.2

COLOR: 9

IBU: 100

OG: 1076

AVAILABLE: CO

Bright golden with handsome greenish overtones and a rocky head of minuscule bubbles that hang on and on. The sweetness of the clovelike yeast is mitigated by the dryness of humulus. The yin and yang of sweet and bitter follow through on the palate, which is slightly medicinal, better with food than not. Recommended with a strong triple cream cheese, fresh honeycrisp apples, walnuts and fougasse peppered with Kalamata olives and onions.
- Charles Finkel
The name is as much a mouthful as the beer. A pale golden version of a combo of styles. Aroma is reminiscent of Belgian strong pale ales with a yeast-derived, bright, spicy coriander character. Hop aromas combine with esters as a perceived floral character. There’s a lot going on with this brew; it’s a mouthful and a rollercoaster experience. Sourness predominates in flavor but is not super assertive. IPAlike bitterness takes you for a ride. Most of, if any, intended hop flavor and aroma become subdued with sipping. A beer that definitely takes you on a mindful journey. See for yourself.
