Furious

September 1, 2007 Brooklyn Center, MN
Reviewers:Stephen Beaumont - Charlie Papazian

Surly Brewing Co.
Brooklyn Center, MN

Available: MN

Furious, an IPA from Surly Brewing, joins the growing number of fine craft beers available in cans, not bottles.

ABV: 6.2
ABW: 4.9
Color: 31
Bitterness: 99
Gravity: 1062

For the record, I have nothing against canned beer and, in fact, am quite an advocate. But the graphics on this can make me think malt liquor, rather than intensely hoppy IPA. No doubting the hop presence in the aroma of this big bruiser of a beer, though, with piney, resiny hop oil notes coming through bold and brutal. In the body, there’s massive hop, and I do mean massive, with some sweet caramel and honey malt in the background. Waaay in the background. Better malt balance would help this ale, but until that happens, I’ll temper its furiousness with the spiciest curry I can manage.
- Stephen Beaumont
Hazy appearance promises plenty of hops. Furiously aromatic, hops are front and center of this amber ale. Not just all about flavor and bitterness; balanced with plenty of flavor and underlying fruity, floral and earthy hop tones. Another great canned craft beer packed with freshness. Expressive and worth seeking. Serve mine with lamb kebabs and stuffed Armenian grape leaves (yalanche). I can’t wait!

Stephen Beaumont
Stephen Beaumont boarded his first plane at the age of 15 and hasn’t looked back since, obsessing about travel to the point that he gets nervous if he doesn’t have a ticket or two stacked on the corner of his desk. When he’s not running around in search of new taste experiences, he makes his home in Toronto, where a new cultural experience is only as far away as the next neighborhood.

Author of the New Complete Joy of Homebrewing, founder of the Great American Beer Festival and a Beer Examiner at www.examiner.com, Papazian is a leading voice in beer and brewing.
