Fulton 300

November 3, 2016

Fulton Beer

Fulton 300
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Style: India Pale Ale ABV: 6.9%

A year-round IPA initially made for the 300th batch at Fulton’s original downtown Minneapolis brewery.

Fulton first brewed this IPA to commemorate its 300th batch, but they keep brewing it because fans keep clamoring for it. And for good reason. Using only Mosaic hops, 300 is a fine example of a beer brewed with the oft-adored hop variety. Aromas of pine resin, citrus and tropical fruit nearly leap out of the glass and are deftly supported by a sturdy structure of malt, providing a cracker-biscuity backbone. The flavors are all there, too, battling it out to the finish line. Citrus zest wins, drying out the finish, but the tropical notes make this beer so sippable, belying the beer’s 7% ABV.

Lisa Morrison has been writing about beer for nearly 20 years. She also owns Belmont Station, a well-known bottle shop and taproom in Portland, Oregon.

The beer pours pale honey in color and stands up a fine, sturdy head. The nose … well, here’s the thing. When I was a kid, we’d hunt for pheasant through the winter into the early spring, our horses trampling through sagebrush and young onion grass. This beer smells like that scene—onions, garlic and green stains on your clothes that you can’t wash out. No flowers or citrus in sight. If that’s your bag (and it is for a lot of folks, it seems), then pounce. The malt backbone is firm, the body is solid, and it’s got nice fruit, too. Me, I’ll have the ribs.
