Originally created by the brewery in 1995, Redhook stopped producing Double Black Stout in 2000. This stout is back as a limited release, available nationwide beginning early November through Febuary, or until supllies run out.

ABV: 7.2
ABW: 5.3
Color: black
Bitterness: 50
Original gravity: 1068


Appears black, but an appealing bright red when held to the light. Dense head of tight bubbles couldn’t be better. The nose could though, as there is little of the roasted aroma that stout is known for, with little if any indication of coffee. Roasted malt mouthfeel is also much lighter than expected with little discernible coffee or chocolate flavors, but still clean and tasty. Sharp hop tones come through in the aftertaste. Good ingredient for a stout float with coffee ice cream.

There’s no turning back. The sound of the pour legitimizes the experience I’m about to have. Black with rich brown head. Tantalizing twist of citrusy hops in aroma precedes roast malt and coffee character. Wonderful caffeine and hop bitter bite. This is a real deal. Don’t put cream in my coffee and no need for added sugar. Rich malt sweetness in background serves as constant reminder that this is beer. Nice assertive balance — aggressive, yet not oppressive. A slow session beer at 7 percent, or certainly a special after-dinner treat.
